Competition categories
The judges for the 2016 competition will again award prizes and certificates to deserving participants at their discretion. Categories will be invented on the day, depending upon the field of contestants. As a guide to possible award categories, please refer to the information below from the 2012 competition.
We have new and improved categories for 2012 to better reflect the needs of our community and entrants.
We have new and improved categories for 2012 to better reflect the needs of our community and entrants.
- Full Beard Natural: in this category part of the cheeks and/or the neck can be partially shaved, but an unbroken line of unshaven facial hair from one temple to the chin to the other temple constitutes a full beard. The beard can be trimmed if desired. No accessories or styling products should be used in this category.
- Partial Beard Natural: this category includes all styles of facial hair that are not full beards or moustaches on their own. No accessories or styling products should be used in this category.
- Moustache Natural: a moustache is hair that grows on the upper lip but can also include hairs growing from elsewhere on the face that are a natural extension of the shape of the moustache. No accessories or styling products should be used in this category.
- Full Beard Styled: part of the cheeks and/or the neck can be partially shaved, but an unbroken line of unshaven facial hair from one temple to the chin to the other temple constitutes a full beard. The beard can be trimmed if desired. Accessories and/or styling products should be included in this category.

- Freestyle: this is your chance for ultimate crazy self-expression through your facial hair. The judges will be looking for flamboyance, theatrics and full costume. Santa Cluas, pirates, Vikings and wizards are encouraged to enter this category.
- Women's Beard: although women are welcome to enter wearing natural beards, we have found that men usually have an unfair advantage. Womwn are encouraged to enter in this category, where if you can't grow it, you can sew it. Or knit it, crochet it, glue it or construct something artistic and wonderful like the glorious Whiskerinas.
- Children's Beard: in 2012 we had some amazing entrants from children. This category is also a construct-your-own, show-us-your-creativity opportunity. Open to children 14 and under.
- Men's Fake Beard: quite frankly we prefer men to grow their own beards, but we just can't leave them out of an opportunity for artistry.
